There are four characteristics that place Caldas as one of the best regions for cultivation coffee and makes this coffee exceptional:
And no wonder why we put Caldas at the top of our sourcing partners, this region is influenced by volcanic soil black and fertile that extend to the hillside of the magical mountain “Nevado del Ruiz” a stratovolcano composed of many layers of lava alternating with hardened volcanic ash and other rocks. Volcanic activity at Nevado del Ruiz began about two million years ago. The summit of Nevado del Ruiz is covered by large glaciers. and it has a lot of movement; The volcano continues to pose a threat to the nearby towns and villages, and it is estimated that up to 500,000 people could be at risk from lahars from future eruptions.
The profiles of the coffee from this region give an extraordinary sensation of flavor and aromas with some Jazmin and cocoa, caramel, and touches of honey and vanilla, the fertile soil where this coffee is planted are due by the nearness to the volcanic hills resulting in a medium acidity and intensity combined with creamy and caramel notes.
In Caldas there is a traditional coffee culture and coffee has created a lifestyle there, It also is home to many tourist attractions related to coffee farms, agriculture, and nature.
Today 300,000 people depend on coffee activity which represents 30% of the total population and hence its importance as a driving force.
Taking advantage of the characteristics of the territory, the coffee growers have not only dedicated themselves to planting and harvesting the grain but have also tended to give it added value and deliver a quality product to the final consumer. Although not all coffee growers have the possibility of processing the coffee they harvest, those work count with cafelumbus to put their coffee into the market.
